CARIBBEAN FOCUS

In collaboration with the nationwide CARIBBEAN FOCUS, Brixton Art Gallery hosted LAMBETH CARNIVAL GROUP for 2 weeks from Sept 12 – Sept 27. On view was an exhibition of photographs of Peter Minshall’s ‘Rat Race’, and a series taken by Jamaican-born photographer, Newton Brown at Notting Hill Carnival. Brown has documented Notting Hill Carnival since 1972.

Workshops presented by the group included: History of Carnival. Costume Making and Making A Backpack and Wire Beading.

Despite the confused publicity. the show met with a good response; the majority of visitors to the Gallery during the show belong to our local community; People of all age groups enjoyed lively discussion in the various workshops. Now that people’s appetites have been whetted, the show is only a taster for what future carnivals will have in store!

DAVID BAILEY

This young black photographer, no stranger to Brixton Art Gallery (He’s exhibited here before). presented work of a high quality, which was again well received.

IMAGES OF CARIBBEAN WOMEN

To coincide with the Benefit Show, the Gallery hosts a separate exhibition – Images of Caribbean Women – around the theme of Labour & Resistance.
Contemporary and historical Images of Caribbean women will be explored in this exhibition from Fri Sept 20 – Fri Oct 4th.

“This exhibition represents an effort alongside otharo towards a fuller revelation of all Caribbean Women” (Black and White) “in the past and present of their region’s history. Its focus is the visual image of the Caribbean Woman… the image of what might be called ordinary women fn their everyday labours… the pictures that have come down to us are deeply distorted – by racism, sexism, imperialism. slavery, and not least by exoticism. This exhibition seeks to tackle the problems that flow from such distorted imagery.”
