Reflections of the Black Experience – 10 Black Photographers

This exhibition of work from ten black photographers was commissioned by the GLC Race Equality Unit.  Monika Baker was the exhibition co-ordinator and I liaised with her on behalf of the Collective.  As Sunil Gupta, one of the photographers has written, ‘The process brought a bunch of people together all interested in the idea of black photography.  The research had unearted this elusive creature, the black photographer.’  The organising and staging of the exhibition was one of the key steps along the path to the formation of Autograph, the Association of Black Photographers.
